Help upgrading Plex Server! Dedicated NAS and dedicated Plex Server or...?
I've been using plex for a year now on an old custom gaming desktop from 2011. I recently built a new main desktop (2020) so I have an extra prebuilt desktopfrom 2017 I could use although this pc only has 3 sata ports on the mobo and limited space in the case.
Current setup
My current setup has a dedicated plex server (with only plex, radarr, sonarr, sabnzbd, tautulli, utorrent, pia vpn and ombi) in a closet wired to router. Everything is automated with trakt lists and windows services. I have about 20 users with up to 7 concurrent streams, no 4k content, mostly 480p for shows and 720p for movies. The only input I make it adding movies/shows manually using a reverse proxy. I occasionally download via torrent/direct download to my main desktop and use windows network sharing to drop the files over to the plex server. However, recently my mapped drives have had issues. For awhile it would come back nonresponsive (when waking main pc from sleep) and I could restart my main pc to re-obtain the connection. But now the connection isn't connecting at all (incorrect server name; can't find server; already connected to server error messages). My laptop however is able to connect to both my main pc and the plex server. (this is important because it leads me towards thinking of getting a NAS since it could be easier to use but not if it's not able to map the drives).
Moving forward
My current idea is to move my dedicated plex server from the 2011 pc to the 2017 pc. The 2017 processor performs just as well as the 2011's but has lower TDP and the case is smaller so can't be used for large storage (multiple hdd). The 2011 pc would be used ONLY as a NAS via FREENAS or file sharing via windows 10. I don't know much about NAS besides buying a synology or dedicated will work similar to plugging in a external hd to a router and it has RAID. The data isn't too important to me, I can always redownload it but if it doesn't require much work/expenses to keep a backup then I'd be open to it. I believe FREENAS and windows 10 storage spaces (hd pool) both allows you to do this. But I have very little knowledge in these topics and NAS in general.

Old 2011 gaming pc currently used as dedicated plex server, prebuilt small 2017 pc lying around. Thinking of using 2017 as dedicated plex server and 2011 as dedicated NAS with either FREENAS or windows 10. Goal is to have everything automated and stable. 2011 Gaming Desktop Specs
2011 PC will be a dedicated NAS so I'll swap the GTX 1060 from there with the 2017 pc's GTX 650 since it won't need it.
If I put FREENAS on the 2011 PC as a dedicated NAS I believe I can put the OS on a 8GB minimum USB stick so I can remove the 256GB SSD and put that as a Data Drive for the 2017 PC

Does this all seem feasible and the best way to go?

I only have experience with Windows but FREENAS doesn't look had to setup. Will I have any issues where the drives won't map or lose connection? Is FreeNAS simply plug and play? I wouldn't mind having the dedicated NAS on windows 10 and using network share but I'm afraid I'll run into the same issues I'm having now.
Is there any benefits FreeNAS vs Windows 10 besides on FreeNas the OS is on a usb and RAID?

What is a tracker A tracker is two things. for the purpose of this subreddit, trackers generally consist of both parts. 1) A website that indexes lists of torrent files to download. The actual payload (movie, application, whatever) is not hosted on these sites, merely an index of torrent files. The data is actually stored distributed across all of the users' computers who are seeding that content. 2) The software which coordinates different users' bittorrent clients to decide who should download/upload from whom. There are public indexers (Pirate Bay (TPB), Kickass Torrents (KAT), etc) that anyone can use if they know the URL There are also private or semi private trackers, where you need membership to access their files or communicate with the tracker protocol. Much of the discussion in /trackers, and most of the content in this FAQ is about private trackers. Give me an invite to X / How do I get started in private trackers? Still no. Also, at many trackers large disk space (100sGB-TB?) dedicated to long term archival seeding is more valued than speed. Private trackers are generally over-seeded,especially for new content. One more fast connection in the mix doesn't help a lot. Keeping a torrent alive years later does. Get into one of the trackers that does applications or open invites. Build a good ratio and a reputation. Increase your user class. Then you will have access to recruitment forums to get into other trackers. Can I buy/trade an invite to X/Should i use invite forums No. Do not buy or trade invites. You will get caught. You will get banned from that and (possibly) all other trackers. You will lose your money. Do not join tracker invite or trading forums. On many trackers merely being a member of any of the account trading and invite forums is a ban-able offense, even if you do not buy or trade any invites. The notable exception is ThePirateSociety (TPS), which is largely considered a bittorrent community and not an invite forum. TPS members use their tracker usernames without risk of ban from trackers and the forum is generally allowed and respected. They do not have an invite offers section like other invite forums, but they do have recruitment threads run by tracker staff. Many people will say iptorrents (IPT), or SceneTime (ST) but see the bottom section on reputation. What is a good TV tracker BroadcastTheNet (BTN) is the best. If you are asking this question, you probably can't get in. Invites are very rare. They do have limited recruitment at at least one top tier tracker. Try MoreThanTv (MTV)or nebulance (TTN/NBL) or BitMeTv (BMTV). Also most TV shows up on the 0-day scene trackers. BTN, and MTV are ratioless. NEB, and BMTV have ratio requirements. MTV is a strong but distant second place. It also carries a decent selection of movies and other content. NEB has ratio, but seasons are freeleech, and "cubits" earned from seeding can be used to "reduce download" and fix your ratio. BMTV was considered one of the greats, but is hard to get into, and difficult to maintain ratio on (can donate for more ratio) What is a good general movie tracker PassThePopcorn (PTP) is widely considered the best general movie tracker. If you are just getting started, you can't get in. It is currently impossible to get in. Both invites and recruitment have been disabled for the meantime. HDBits (HDB) is considered bettemore elite by some, but has a reputation of being very difficult to get into. Most of their popular content filters down to other trackers. They have some recruitment threads are top tier trackers, for very high user classes. AwesomeHd (AHD), TehConnection (Tehc), BeyondHD (BHD) , UHDBits, are very good alternates that are easier to get into. Realistically, any one of them would serve 99.9% of your cinema needs. There are many more movie trackers that specialize in certain formats or genres, see the spreadsheet or flowcharts below if you want something special. AHD focuses exclusively on high def releases, and has a good amount of TV bluray encodes and remuxes as a bonus Tehc is probably the easiest of the more popular movie trackers to get into, and has a good selection. BHD is ratioless. Generally almost all of the movie trackers are ratio sites, but most have bonus point or freeleech systems that make maintaining ratio easy if you try. For new, popular music, most of the scene/general trackers will have it. What is a good ebook/audiobook tracker Bibliotik (Bib) and MyAnonymouse (MAM). Bib is a lot harder to get into, and is harder to keep ratio on, but has a large catalog, especially of retail ebooks. MAM has a much wider selection of audiobooks, but a very good collection of ebooks and staff-picks are regularly set to freeleech to help with ratio. MAM occasionally has interviews for recruitment. Best sellers are often available from scene/general trackers. Games GazelleGames (GGn) is the biggest. UltimateGamerClub (UGC) is a newcomer to the gaming sites, and has open applications. Scene trackers generally carry games too. I'm looking for something rare/obscure/cult/VHS/fan-edits Myspleen has a great selection of out of print, VHS, 80s, 90s, etc. They are also famous as the home of several Star Wars preservation projects and fan-edits. CinemaGeddon (CG) and , Karaganga (KG), cinematic have a lot of cult, B, and art house movies. Also PTP's and BTN's huge catalogs have a wide selection of older or more unusual content if you can get into them. Porn Empornium is probably the best. What is up with all these acronyms! Some trackers have rules about writing their name in full to avoid attention. Others are just long and people are lazy and don't want to type them over and over. It also makes those in the know feel more important than those not in the know. Go google them, they all come up. They are much safer. They generally have higher quality releases and bigger back-catalog. They have community. If you make requests, they often will get filled. Speeds are generally quite fast. They also have rules. If you can't contribute back by long term seeding, uploading, encoding or some other contribution - you may find it a struggle. Are the high level trackers better than the entry level trackers Yes. But maybe not in a way that matters to you. For US/English, mainstream, recent content every place has it, and has it in good quality. Sites such as AHD, Tehc, MTV, Bb (and many others), etc have excellent communities, and seriously can serve 99.9% of your needs in for their target specialty. The elite trackers generally have a much wider selection of items, more encodes for a given item, etc. It is difficult to exaggerate how much bigger PTP and BTN are than their competition in terms of catalog. On the other hand if you are interested in what was on TV in the last week, and the latest blockbuster release, that extra selection is mostly dead-weight you won't miss. See also the next question about Scene vs P2P Are P2P/Internal/Remux releases better than the Scene release? Yes. But maybe not enough to care. The quality of a good P2P/Internal is measurably better. But is the quality noticeably better? YMMV depending on your eyesight, your TV/computer, how far away you are, your lighting, your sound system, etc. Realistically, unless someone did a really shit encode, most people probably cant tell the difference between the scene release and the P2P/Internal release. (which is not to say that there aren't groups that consistently do shit releases, for both scene and p2p/internal groups) trackers/comments/3r9hin/asapfleetreleases_getting_internald_afterwards/ Most people can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080. Most people can't tell the difference between V2 and V0 and FLAC. For those that can, (or that pretend they can) they go to the higher-tier sites with more P2P and Internal releases. Some people really do care about 100% transparency (in some cases even improvements OVER the bluray/wire). They are willing to wait, and they are willing to give up the bandwidth/space/ratio. This probably matters more for movies, where people keep them around for long term repeat viewing and a small wait for a better version is not significant. Also, unless you are dealing with a CAM or Screener, the movie was out in theaters months ago, so the additional wait for better quality and the resultant additional risk of spoilers is minimal. In the TV world, scene typically rules, because if you don't want the scene release, waiting might mean waiting for the Bluray to come out, or at least a day or two, and the show might get spoiled the next day at work/school. However, the first scene release is for some shows is of noticeably lower quality due to racing, and a P2P/Internal/Proper release will generally come out within a few hours/day that is better (Game of Thrones commonly has this issue) Here is a thread that shows good comparisons between various releases of Westworld S01E01. /Piracy/comments/56vznwestworld_s01e01_comparisons/ Even the scene release is huge. I want a high quality 1GB 1080p movie rip No. You don't. Even a raw DVD is 5-9GB. A raw BluRay is 30-50GB. Compression is good, but not free. You are giving up an incredible amount of data to compress the file down that far. You would be far better served by watching a 720p or 480p version that wasn't compressed as much. Compare these two screenshots of StarWars, and look at the detail in the guy's wrinkles. If you aren't going to watch a version that lets you see that detail, then don't bother with the 1080p version, because its literally worse quality than a 720p version of equal size.
You don't need to go to 30GB (which is remux range, or something special you want perfect for repeat watching). But 5-10-15-20 is probably correct, depending on the type of movie (animation or drama can get away with less. Action needs more).
I want X.265 releases The general consensus is that x265 is not as good as x264 yet. While the file sizes are significantly smaller, the quality is also reduced. As 4k content becomes more common, the size savings will be important, but thus far is isn't a good trade for most people. Also, the x265 encoder takes significantly longer (20x) to encode, so is generally not used by the Scene racers. Also, most 265 releases are re-encodes from the x264 release, and most of the higher end trackers do not allow lossy re-encodes. PrivateHD does have a release group that makes 265 encodes from the source though. Here is a shot typical of a 265 conversion. Note the loss of detail in the pinstripes, or on the pews. Is this watchable? Yes. How do I use trackers safely (from a legal/MPAA standpoint) VPN or Seedbox. If you use public trackers from the US, or many other countries, use of a VPN and or Seedbox is strongly recommended. You could lose your internet access, or in rare cases be sued for copyright infringement by using public trackers. Some VPNs and Seedboxes will forward any ISP/MPAA letters they receive. Do some research and pick one that is piracy friendly, and does not keep logs. Safety is much less of a concern on private trackers. The majority of users do not use either VPN nor Seedboxes with private trackers and ISP issues (other than exceeding bandwidth caps) are very rare. Most private trackers allow VPN and Seedboxes for downloading. Many have rules against VPNs for browsing the site. Double check before you use one. Seriously, double check. Several of the top tier trackers will permanently disable your account for using a VPN or using a VPN incorrectly. (WCD, PTP, BTN, etc) A seedbox gives you both increased security and higher speeds for maintaining ratio. Be careful of seedboxes that use shared IPs and double check your tracker's rules. They are much safer. They generally have higher quality releases and bigger back-catalog. They have community. If you make requests, they often will get filled. Speeds are generally quite fast. They also have rules. If you can't contribute back by long term seeding, uploading, encoding or some other contribution - you may find it a struggle. Are the high level trackers better than the entry level trackers Yes. But maybe not in a way that matters to you. For US/English, mainstream, recent (last 10 years?) content every place has it, and has it in good quality. Sites such as AHD, Tehc, MTV, Bb (and many others), etc have excellent communities, and seriously can serve 99.9% of your needs in for their target specialty. The elite trackers generally have a much wider selection of items, more encodes for a given item, etc. It is difficult to exaggerate how much bigger PTP and BTN are than their competition in terms of catalog. On the other hand if you are interested in what was on TV in the last week, and the latest blockbuster release, that extra selection is mostly dead-weight you won't miss. See also the next question about Scene vs P2P Are P2P/Internal/Remux releases better than the Scene release? Yes. But maybe not enough to care. The quality of a good P2P/Internal is measurably better. But is the quality noticeably better? YMMV depending on your eyesight, your TV/computer, how far away you are, your lighting, your sound system, etc. Realistically, unless someone did a really shit encode, most people probably cant tell the difference between the scene release and the P2P/Internal release. (which is not to say that there aren't groups that consistently do shit releases, for both scene and p2p/internal groups) trackers/comments/3r9hin/asapfleetreleases_getting_internald_afterwards/ Most people can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080. Most people can't tell the difference between V2 and V0 and FLAC. For those that can, (or that pretend they can) they go to the higher-tier sites with more P2P and Internal releases. Some people really do care about 100% transparency (in some cases even improvements OVER the bluray/wire). They are willing to wait, and they are willing to give up the bandwidth/space/ratio. This probably matters more for movies, where people keep them around for long term repeat viewing and a small wait for a better version is not significant. Also, unless you are dealing with a CAM or Screener, the movie was out in theaters months ago, so the additional wait for better quality and the resultant additional risk of spoilers is minimal. In the TV world, scene typically rules, because if you don't want the scene release, waiting might mean waiting for the Bluray to come out, or at least a day or two, and the show might get spoiled the next day at work/school. However, the first scene release is for some shows is of noticeably lower quality due to racing, and a P2P/Internal/Proper release will generally come out within a few hours/day that is better (Game of Thrones commonly has this issue) Here is a thread that shows good comparisons between various releases of Westworld S01E01. /Piracy/comments/56vznwestworld_s01e01_comparisons/ Even the scene release is huge. I want a high quality 1GB 1080p movie rip No. You don't. Even a raw DVD is 5-9GB. A raw BluRay is 30-50GB. Compression is good, but not free. You are giving up an incredible amount of data to compress the file down that far. You would be far better served by watching a 720p or 480p version that wasn't compressed as much. Compare these two screenshots of StarWars, and look at the detail in the guy's wrinkles. If you aren't going to watch a version that lets you see that detail, then don't bother with the 1080p version, because its literally worse quality than a 720p version of equal size.
You don't need to go to 30GB (which is remux range, or something special you want perfect for repeat watching). But 5-10-15-20 is probably correct, depending on the type of movie (animation or drama can get away with less. Action needs more).
I want X.265 releases The general consensus is that x265 is not as good as x264 yet. While the file sizes are significantly smaller, the quality is also reduced. As 4k content becomes more common, the size savings will be important, but thus far is isn't a good trade for most people. Also, the x265 encoder takes significantly longer (20x) to encode, so is generally not used by the Scene racers.

I'd just like to give a little background of my current setup.
Sick Beard - Automatically download .nzb's for TV shows.
Couch Potato- Automatically download .nzb's or torrents for Movies.
RSS Feed (showRSS) - Torrent RSS feed which allows you to pick and choose episodes to keep track of. I use uTorrent to subscribe.
uTorrent - Torrent downloader.
SABnzbd - Usenet downloader for .nzb files. Also used to rename TV shows and move them (E.g. E:\TV\Game of Thrones\Season 5\Game of Thrones - S05E01.mp4).
TVRename - To further rename the TV shows. It includes the actual title in the episode name (E.g. Game of Thrones - S05E01 - The Wars to Come.mp4). It seems to require I sort them into folders first named as the show title.
Plex - To make use of all the above.
This setup has been working well for me for TV automation. I will automatically download TV shows through SickBeard which will download through SABnzbd. SABnzbd will automatically rename the episode (without episode title) and move it to another directory. I will then kick off a script which runs TVRename in the background which will rename the TV show fully with episode title and take care of ones that didn't work through SABnzbd (80-90% success rate). Plex will then scan my TV directory and it'll come up in Recently Added or On Deck. If anyone has questions about the setup, feel free to ask. Since Usenet is becomming more reliable every month, I wanted to switch to torrent automation through RSS feeds. I am still tweaking the setup but it is downloading the episodes successfully. What I am having trouble with is sorting the downloaded file. If I could find a way to take care of the sorting that SABnzbd is doing then i'll be good because TVRename can do the rest. Does anyone have a batch script or another tool which will recognize multiple release group patterns and rename the file/folder? EDIT: I've installed Sonarr and it looks awesome so far. I have only configured the basics and am loving it (E.g. Indexes and client downloaders). I will still need to dig into the other features such as folder monitor to grab missing episodes and renaming however this looks like a winner. Thanks for all the suggestions.
After a long server overhaul, I want to give the /r/PleX community a kudos
I've had the past few days off of work and decided to spend it working on revamping my previous server setup with a more intricate and automated system. My hardware is still golden and runs off of my gaming server so it has plenty of CPU and RAM to spare. My previous software setup was a simple ShowRSS feed autodownloading via uTorrent with post-processing done by FileBot. Now! After a whole two days of work my server is fully automated! I set up a custom HTML page for my users to access the server on the external network and requests new shows/movies using PlexRequest. I added SickRage and CouchPotato for automatic movie and TV downloading. Added PlexPY to gain further insight into the usage of my server. And my next step is PlexEmail to be able to communicate with my current server users. My point of this article is not to brag about the setup, but to thank everyone in the community here who has posted so far. I referenced /plex multiple times during the setup and always eventually found the answer. I'm super stoked about my setup and owe it at least partly to you guys! Thanks!
Torrenting for years; New ISP suddenly on my case.
Throwaway account. I've been torrenting for awhile now, since before college (5+ years ago). I've never had an issue with it, and generally only use it to try games before I buy or the occasional movie. I've never been a huge file sharing person, I just don't have a lot of money. Forgive me for sounding like a cheapskate, but I just can't justify spending $30-60 USD on a product I might not even like. Anyway, I recently moved to a new apartment. With a new apartment comes a new ISP. New town is a bit out of the way, so we don't have any of the real big ISP names--I'm currently with Northland Cable. I grabbed a movie off TPB a couple weeks ago, and last week started receiving automated messages about "copyright infringement" that came with a phone number and a ticket #. I called them up and asked what was up. The service rep I spoke to had the name of the file I downloaded, the client I used to download it (qBittorrent), and the time and date of download. The irony of it all? I had downloaded a movie I actually owned--I just left a case of DvD/Games behind in the old apartment that I didn't think I'd want anymore. Needless to say, it was a bit troubling. It almost feels like an invasion of my privacy, though I'm sure when I signed up for their service I agreed to a contract that said they could access this information or something of the sort. I've always used uTorrent until recently, when I made the switch to qBitorrent, and I'm wondering if that's what made the difference, though honestly I have no idea. Situations like this make me realize how much I don't know about the technology I use daily and basically take for granted. I would like to prevent this from happening in the future. One, because I would still like to enjoy the occasional torrent, and (more importantly) two, I'd like my ISP to respect my damn privacy. I've looked into the basics of VPNs, but am a bit lost. Do any of you pirates have advice or suggestions on how to protect myself? I'd be grateful for any help that anyone could provide.
Torrents... wishlist for a power user (Does any better software exist?)
Hey all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm sure I'll hear about it at full volume if I'm wrong :) I'm looking for a torrent download software that is more flexible than what I've found. I'm allegedly running 5 instances of uTorrent, one for each type of media, Audiobooks, TV, Movies, Games, Music. Each uTorrent is set to look at a Dropbox folder for .torrent files and once the file has finished downloading, the .torrent file gets moved to a specific folder (separate for each type of media). Once the download has completed, the file is moved to a separate folder and then organized by some automated software, named and put away neatly. Ideally, I think what I'm looking for is a software that can: 1) Watch Multiple folders for .torrent files 2) Move the .torrent file for completed downloads to a specific folder (ie. Torrent Files\Movies ---Goes to -- Completed\Completed Torrents\Movies) 3) Once the download is completed, move to the downloaded item to a folder specific to where it was downloaded. Right now the setup of 5 instances of uTorrent is proving to be a bit resource intensive, I'd love to trim the fat. All helpful suggestions are appreciated! Thanks 062c
Some tips and ideas that my be helpful to your torrenting. Post any of your own.
Just thought I would share some of the things I have setup recently that makes torrenting a little more easy. Most of you have probably done some of these or something similair. I run a always-on-serveseedbox so these might not be helpful to you. Dropbox I set up a folder on dropbox called "Torrents" I then changed the settings in uTorrent to automatically start .torrent files and browsed to that Dropbox folder. It is also set to automatically delete the .torrent file when done loading so I know if the torrent was started if the file disappears. Also helpful because you can use the web interface to start a torrent from anywhere with internet access. Batch File I have a batch file that does a couple things:
I found that when I played video games I was always vnc'ing into the machine, then pausing all of my torrents so that I have a good gaming connection, then I would start back up the seeding when I was done. So I wrote a batch file that checks if my xbox is on, if it is then it quits uTorrent, if the xbox is off, it checks to see if uTorrent is already running, if not then it start it, it then delays 30 seconds and checks again.
Sometimes when I start a torrent I forget to check if its finished or it finished a lot quicker than I was expecting, so I wrote a batch file that sends me a text message once my download is finished. Now I know that uTorrent has a built in "Run this command when torrent finishes downloading" but I wanted this automated. So I changed the uTorrent settings to "Automatically move completed torrents to..." and browsed to a "Completed Torrents" folder. The batch file is always running, it counts the number of files, delays 30 seconds, then counts the number of files again. If the new number of files is greater than the old number of files, a torrent must have completed and has been moved into the "Completed Torrents" folder, I then use the open source Command Line email client sendEmail to send my self a text message. This may not work for all of you but I'm sure you can find a way to make it work. I have Verizon so to send myself a text message all I need to do is send an email to [email protected] If you have an iphone (I don't so this may not be right) you can send an email to yourself using the "free text" app. It should give you an email number and you recieve it as a text. Or you could setup google voice to call you or send a text if you get a new email (Should be possible, haven't tried this)
Anyway with both of these together I drop in a torrent file and however long later I get a text letting me know its done. DISCLAIMER: use at your own risk. I'm not to blame if you get a bazillion text messages because something broke.
