The Seven Stoppers of Stoke: The men who make-up Stoke City's current goalkeeping woes, and how they got there

Yes, that's right. Only 3 months and 19 games into the start of the 2020/21 season, Stoke City F.C., founders of the football league and the oldest club currently in the football league, have already named 7 different goalkeepers in their 18 man matchday squad.
With only one of them having left The Potters in this time, it means Stoke City currently have 6 goalkeepers on the books registered in their first-team squad, more than any other team in Europe.
While this is only going to be the case for a maximum of two months as two of the men will be out of contract, I thought I'd still have just a quick look into the 7 men staking their claim for the Number 1 spot at the Staffordshire giants, and how they came to wind-up at the bet365 Stadium.
** 1. Joe Bursik**
The current keeper in the nets for Stoke at the time of writing, Joe Bursik is also, alebit arguably, the least qualified for the position out of the lot.
Bursik joined the club from the AFC Wimbledon Under-18's back in 2017 after 8 years in The Dons academy. From then, Bursik has enjoyed semi-successful loan stints at Hednesford Town, AFC Telford and Accrington. Bursik has actually already gone out on loan in the 20/21 season to Doncaster Rovers, making 10 league appearances for the Yorkshire outfit, before being re-called from the loan after injury to Angus Gunn
** 2. Angus Gunn**
Following on from Bursik, lets have a dive into the career of the man he replaced. Angus Gunn was born in Norwich, joining the club of the same name as a youngster, before quickly being snapped up by the Manchester City academy at 15 year olds.
Gunn would never get a chance to stake a claim with The Citizens and so sought a loan spell back to his boyhood club in the summer of 2017. After one season of the depthless hell hole that is Championship mid-table obscurity, Gunn sought a permanent move to a much stronger outfit than that at Carrow Road.
Southampton were quick to snap up the 22 year-old for an estimated fee of around £13.5 million. However, in the two years so far spent at St. Mary's, Gunn only managed 22 league appearances, ultimately leading him straight back into the bottomless trap hole of bench-warming in the Championship with Stoke
Coming in to replace Jack Butland on the Stoke bench, Gunn eventually finding himself quickly into the starting line-up after an injury to teammate Adam Davies saw Gunn come in in a 2-0 away loss to Swansea back in October.
4 appearances later, Gunn would himself be forced out for up to 8 weeks with an ankle ligament injury. Where his Stoke City position lies at the end of the season really comes down to how quickly Gunn can recover.
** 3. Jack Butland**
The one time England wonderkid that had every onlooker licking his lips back in 2013, Jack Butland's fall from international star to mid-table benchwarmer is as drastic as it is sad.
Signed from Birmingham back in 2013 from Birmingham City for a neat sum of £3.5 million, Butland would go on to register over 150 league appearances for Stoke, after several loan spells where Asmir Begovic was the Potters favourite under Mark Hughes, the Bosnian's move to Chelsea come in as the immediate number one in the potteries.
After several impressive season between the sticks, seeing him win the Fans Player of the Year twice and his stock rise dramatically, resulting in him being linked with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, Butland suffered a fractured ankle in England's 3-2 win over Germany in March 2016.
The injury the end of Buland's season and subsequently his England Career. Butland hasn't made an international appearance since and a string of bad form spanning relegation with Stoke and two following seasons in the Championship, he lost the starting position to Adam Davies.
Butland has since moved to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2020, where he has yet to register an appearance at Selhurst Park and see his recovery from England halted by a positive COVID test. Honestly, this man hasn't caught a break since 2016, however when I asked him for a picture in Morisson's once he was a bit snippy, so yeah he deserves it.
** 4. Adam Davies**
And now, the man who dethroned Butland as the number one at Stoke City, Adam Davies is by far the best and most talented player of our 7. The twice capped Welshman, who was actually born in Rintein, Germany (not gonna blame you for not knowing that tid bit), signed for the club as back-up to Butland from Barnsley in August 2019, alongside fellow League One Team of the Season winner Liam Lindsay.
While Lindsay's career at Stoke has halted almost immediately, Davies has seen himself fully enforced as the Potters' starting 'keeper. Seeing himself come into the 2020/21 off the back of a tremendous end of last season which saw Stoke lose once in their last six games, Davies was on hot form.
Unfortunately, during his 12th league appearance for the West Midlands side, Davies suffered a torn cruciate knee ligament, ruling him out for an estimated 3 months. If not for this injury, Stoke would be nowhere near the level of 'keeper confusion that they are now, so in the end, it's all his fault (jk love you Adam, please get fit soon x).
** 5. Blondy Nna Noukeu**
By far the most mysterious and unknown member of this group, and likely the entire squad, very little is actually known of the 19 year old Belgian/Cameroonian shot stopper.
Noukeu has been called up by the Cameroon National Team so far this season, but has yet to register a career appearance in goal, and considering he was third choice at the start of the season and now finds himself ranked 7th in that list, that ain't changing anytime soon buddy.
Like, seriously, imagine being 3rd choice keeper, both ahead of you get injured, so the club finds four more people immediately before even thinking about you. That's harsh af man.
** 6. Niki Mäenpää**
The penultimate keeper in this seven will hopefully turn out to be the penultimate signing Stoke have to make this season. Mäenpää, who at 35 joins the club having been released by Bristol City at the end of last season, was intended to come in to play as support for youngster Joe Bursik.
Not even expected to ever even play for the first team, two days after signing for the club, Mäenpää suffered an injury during training, leaving him out until at least the New Year.
This left Michael O'Neill scrambling again, looking to sign yet another senior goalkeeper, with a game against Wycombe Wanderers in two days time.
** 7. Andy Lonergan**
This signing is the biggest coup of the season and no one even noticed it. The Club World Cup winning, Champions League winner, Premier League champion dropping down to the chamionship ON A FREE should be shocking news!
Nah, Andy Lonergan left Liverpool at the end of last season after no minutes ever gained at Anfield, but was given a Premier League winners medal by Jurgen Klopp, noting how his guidance really improved the quality of the the backup goalkeeping squad and signifying how the whole squad is as important as each. A touching gesture, but that's a bit of a kop-out mate, like giving the fat kid an MVP award at the end of the season because he didn't score an own goal all season.
BONUS 8TH KEEPER THAT I FORGOT ABOUT
If this story couldn't get any more ridiculous, I forgot about Stokes' 8th keeper, the England Under-18 international Nathan Broome!
Currently a member of the Stoke academy, Broome was called up by Kevin Betsy to represent his nation. Initially poised to take over as bench keeper to Joe Bursik, Broome has also picked up an injury and so also faces time on the sidelines.
So there you have it, a thorough run through of every goalkeeper currently fighting for a first team spot Stoke where all they have to do is recover quickly.
At time of writing, Joe Bursik is the starting keeper, while normally being considered Stoke's 4th choice, while Andy Lonergan remains on the bench, while being considered 8th in the list by Michael O'Neill. Something tells me this won't be over soon and soon we'll be getting Doris the Tea Lady in a pair of Puma goalie gloves from Sports Direct and training with the big boys down at Clayton Wood.

Championship season preview #2 - Stoke City

Last season we finished in a disappointing 16th position despite keeping the majority of our Premier League squad together and spending over £30m on new signings.
The only one that really worked out was Nigerian international Peter Etebo who looks like a strong midfielder that could easily play in the top flight. James McClean continued his career-long trait of misplacing crosses whilst Tom Ince showed why he's already played for nine clubs despite only being 27. We started Benik Afobe as a lone striker, smacking long balls in his general direction despite it being very clear that he likes to run into space in behind the defence. Ashley Williams enjoyed his season long holiday from Everton and the less said about Sam Clucas, Cuco Martina and Ryan Woods the better.
Gary Rowett was seen by most to be a solid managerial appointment but we were sadly proven incorrect. Low quality football and weird mannerisms meant that he never clicked with the fanbase. He always referred to 'Stoke' rather than 'we' or 'us' making him sound distant and passive.
This triggered the club to sack Rowett in January and bring in Nathan Jones following his excellent work at Luton Town. To be honest we didn't really improve much although we did see the occasional encouraging performance like beating Leeds United 2-1 in Jones' first home league game and drawing 2-2 against Norwich City. In all fairness it was quite apparent that we didn't have the fitness or players to execute Jones' desired system yet.

This Season

​
Despite only spending around £6m this summer we've built a much more rounded squad to compete for promotion this year. The club have brought in players designed to fit Jones' formation and tactics rather than making random (and expensive) signings as we did under Rowett and in the last two years of Mark Hughes' reign. Importantly we also appear to be keeping hold of Jack Butland and Joe Allen who are two of our better players.

How will we do this season ​
There's no point being a football fan if you're not going to be an optimist. So I have to expect that Stoke will challenge for promotion. I like the look of Jones. He's not afraid to make big decisions and I'm confident that he is building a squad that is hungry for results, not just the payslip. Looking at the rest of the league I don't think the quality will be as high as last season. In my opinion the likely automatic promotion challengers will be Cardiff City and WBA. We will finish top six.

Why to like us ​
We're owned by a local family who made their fortune and invested it back into the club and the city. Our season ticket prices have stayed the same for over a decade and the club provides free travel to away games. We do a huge amount of charity and community work in a local area where football means everything. Seriously if you've been to Stoke-on-Trent you'll know there's not much else... Plus it's kind of funny how unsuccessful we've been despite our long history.

Where to start... Pulis, Hughes, Shawcross, orcs, wind, anti-football, big fat Kevin Wimmer. Take your pick.

Summary ​
When we got relegated from the top flight in 1985 it took us 23 years to get back there. We're all hoping that it doesn't take as long this time. We have everything in place to be a Premier League club but over the last few years we've made an endless amount of bad decisions. It looks like we're improving on and off the pitch so here's to a successful season!

Home field advantage in the Premier League: which teams had/have it best? Worst?

49 teams have played in the Premier League era. Obviously, sample sizes will be extremely out of whack but I think it's fair to analyze the points percentage of teams in terms of their home records overall.
Note that I've decided to exclude the 2019-20 season since its ongoing. I may make an updated post about this in the future where I include the final tallies. Obviously, teams like Liverpool will have their percentages significantly increased.
I do realize there is an obvious correlation between a team's home record and their overall record. With that being said, home field advantage does help quite a bit across the board.
Without further ado, here we go:
  1. Manchester United (Old Trafford): 374-95-51, 0.780%. This one was probably obvious as #1. The ultimate house of horrors in the Premier League era, United may not have quite the same home-field advantage as they did under Fergie but make no mistake, it is still very much guaranteed to be a difficult matchup coming into United's home turf. There's a reason United has been so dominant in the Premier League era and their near invincibility at home is both a consequence and a cause of that.
  2. Arsenal (Highbury/Emirates Stadium): 337-119-63, 0.726%. Arsenal may not be winning like they used to but they still own one of the scariest home-field advantages in the Premier League. They were frightening in Highbury and it carried over to the move to Emirates. Very few teams win here, period.
  3. Chelsea (Stamford Bridge): 325-127-67, 0.708%. After getting over the rough early years of their Premier League tenure, Chelsea has been an absolute force of nature especially at home. They had a streak of several seasons without losing at home in the 2000s which makes Liverpool's current streak looks like child's play. Chelsea remains one of the toughest away matchups for any team.
  4. Liverpool (Anfield): 320-129-71, 0.698%. Even prior to Liverpool's recent multi-season home unbeaten streak, Anfield was quite the fortress for them. This number going to go up fast as Liverpool is gunning to break Chelsea's home unbeaten streak and currently have won a top-flight record 22-straight home games. Anfield has certainly become quite the nightmare for opposing teams. Alas, it's probably going to take some lower-profile club like Watford to end that streak. It always happens that way. It's so weird.
  5. Manchester City (Maine Road/City of Manchester Stadium/Etihad Stadium): 237-91-97, 0.629%. Yes, there was a time City was really, really bad, which is why their home record isn't as high as some of the other big names in the Premier League. City's home dominance has been a more recent phenomenon and it is played a crucial part in them winning 4 titles the last decade.
  6. Tottenham Hotspur (White Hart Lane/Tottenham Hotspur Stadium): 276-127-116, 0.613%. The team that's good, but never good enough. They've been in the Premier League since its inception and have one of the tougher venues for opposing teams to go into. They're having a bit of a down year but I hope this team recovers since compared to your Arsenals and Chelseas they've been waiting a very long time for their next title.
  7. Leeds United (Elland Road): 119-59-56, 0.593%. Leeds was a huge name in the 90s and early 2000s, and their strong home-field advantage was a major reason why. Sadly, they've also become a sort of warning example as their mismanagement caused them to crater extremely quickly. They're in great position to make it back in the Premier League for next season...after a 16-year absence. Leeds is a true tragic story.
  8. Newcastle United (St James' Park): 233-109-118, 0.586%. Newcastle was a big name in the 90s and 2000s but have sort of fallen off the deep end since then, though they've managed to be very consistent in staying in the Premier League as well. While a lot of it does come from the early glory Premier League days, Newcastle still has quite the strong home advantage even if they're one of the more mediocre clubs overall.
  9. Everton (Goodison Park): 257-140-132, 0.574%. Everton may have one of the most underrated home-field advantages in the Premier League. They're not the best in this regard, but make no mistake, they are not to be messed with at home. Everton has kind of had a wonky Premier League career with moments towards the top, middle, and bottom of the table, but one thing that has been consistent is their ability to pull out home wins.
  10. Blackburn Rovers (Ewood Park): 170-84-94, 0.569%. I find it amazing that even in Blackburn's second stint in the Premier League which was far more mediocre in nature, they managed to maintain quite a strong home-field advantage. Obviously, their dominant early years were also a contributing factor, but it cannot be understated that home has been where the heart is for Blackburn.
  11. Stoke City (Britannia Stadium/bet365 Stadium): 83-54-54, 0.529%. Stoke's 10-year stay in the Premier League was never anything too special but they actually managed do very well on their home turf during this time. My heart goes out to Stoke fans who are waiting for the team's first title since the inception of English football in 1888-89 (they were a founding member of the Football League, don't forget!).
  12. West Ham United (Boleyn Ground/London Stadium): 192-110-141, 0.516%. West Ham may not have a league title but they do have one of the stronger home-field advantages in the Premier League. It's something for their fans to hold onto as the wait goes on. They do have to worry about fighting off relegation, though...
  13. Fulham (Craven Cottage/Loftus Road): 116-59-89, 0.514%. For all of their bottom-half finishes throughout their long Premier League stint in the 2000s and 2010s, Fulham actually managed to pull out quite the impressive home record. I really sympathize with Fulham because they're always overshadowed by Chelsea. It doesn't seem fair that the club that is the namesake of the district in London is quite the little sister team in comparison. I digress, however. The reason Fulham struggled so much was there were so many times when it felt like they would never, ever win another damn road game. Their road records were always atrocious and towards the very bottom. If they could've fixed that then maybe they would've done better.
  14. Sheffield United (Bramall Lane): 24-22-15, 0.514%. Sheffield United fans hope that they can get some Premier League consistency after having quick falling outs and only 3 total seasons prior to this one. Even then, they've been quite alright at home and their points percentage is likely going to go up after this season.
  15. Southampton (The Dell/St Mary's Stadium): 158-111-117, 0.505%. Southampton has had 20 seasons of Premier League experience prior to the current one and yet has always been average to downright bad. Sometimes I forget they even play in the Premier League. And yet, their home record is surprisingly good for all the double-digit finishes they've had over the years. I have to give them that.
  16. Aston Villa (Villa Park): 186-138-136, 0.504%. Villa's home record took a huge hit in the 2010s when they were regular bottom feeders in the Premier League all the way till their most recent relegation after a 2015-16 season...yeah, we won't talk about that one. Overall, though, they've still managed to maintain a decent home field advantage even if it's nowhere near what it used to be.
  17. Sheffield Wednesday (Hillsborough Stadium): 63-50-45, 0.504%. Wednesday was a founding member of the Premier League but they never were a major title contender although they had a decent home-field advantage throughout their 8-year stint. However, Wednesday suffered banishment after the 1999-2000 season and have not been back since. The way this season has been going, looks like Wednesday fans still have another year stuck in the Championship.
  18. Birmingham City (St Andrew's): 50-46-37, 0.491%. Birmingham was never a bad home team in the Premier League despite their usually mediocre to downright awful records. They still had one of the weirder Premier League seasons in 2010-11, their last Premier League season to date, in which they won the EFL Cup and got relegated. I don't know how you feel about that as a fan.
  19. Portsmouth (Fratton Park): 54-34-45, 0.491%. I'll never forget Portsmouth's 2008 FA Cup win. They had a nice 7-year Premier League stint in the 2000s and while they were usually middling-to-mediocre, at least 2008 had something to celebrate. Sadly, they fell off a massive cliff afterward and have not played in the Premier League since the 2009-10 season. They had decent home-field advantage during their Premier League stay.
  20. Wimbledon (Selhurst Park): 76-57-63, 0.485%. Wimbledon may have helped found the Premier League but they never really made much noise in it although they did maintain a decent home record in the meantime. This is the same Wimbledon that very controversially relocated to Milton Keynes to become the Milton Keynes Dons. A modern tragedy if you ask me.
  21. Middlesbrough (Ayresome Park/Riverside Stadium): 111-84-92, 0.484%. Boro had a nice stint throughout the entirety of the 2000s but were almost always resigned to the middle of the table. At least they had a moderate amount of success at home, though by no means was their record all that spectacular either.
  22. Norwich City (Carrow Road): 59-52-47, 0.483%. Norwich is yet another team that you probably have to think twice about when answering "which teams founded the Premier League". Aside from a spectacular inaugural Premier League season, Norwich has struggled to find its footing in the Premier League and has never lasted very long in it at all, the longest being 2 3-year stints. It's amazing that with all their 1-year stints, Norwich has been OK at home. Sadly, it looks like this season is going to be another one of those 1-year stints and their home record is bound to take a hit.
  23. Leicester City (Filbert Street/The Walkers Stadium/King Power Stadium): 95-75-79, 0.482%. The more you analyze the seasons prior (and even after) Leicester shocking the world in 2015-16, the more amazing that season becomes. Leicester has been a middling to bad team for its entire Premier League career and even their home field wasn't able to save them from regular mediocrity (though they have done much better at home recently)...aside from 2015-16 of course. Having a pretty good 2019-20, however, though no one will remember that due to how a certain other team is doing.
  24. Bolton Wanderers (Burnden Park/Reebok Stadium): 94-71-80, 0.480%. I remember Bolton as always being that one awkward kid that hangs out with the cool kids but no one really takes him seriously. That being said, you can't really avoid acknowledging their existence either. Bolton's home record wasn't terrible in the Premier League but it didn't help them get out of the middle to bottom of the table (mostly) throughout the 2000s. On a side note, their stadium has gone through name-change hell and it's currently called University of Bolton Stadium.
  25. Swansea City (Liberty Stadium): 51-37-45, 0.476%. Unlike a certain other Welsh club (which we'll get to later), Swansea managed to represent Wales decently in the Premier League for 7 straight seasons, even cracking the top half a few times. Their home record isn't exceptional but all things considered it isn't too shabby either.
  26. Reading (Madejski Stadium): 23-12-22, 0.474%. Having made the top flight for the first time in 2006-07, that season unfortunately proved to be more of a one-off as Reading to date has only managed 3 seasons in the Premier League. At least they had an OK home record during those seasons, though a lot of that is skewed to said 2006-07 season.
  27. Coventry City (Highfield Road): 65-56-56, 0.473%. If you had to name all the founding members of the Premier League, Coventry may not be the first on your mind but they played the first 9 seasons of the Premier Leagues existence in it. They were never that good but they somehow managed to hang around and maybe their kind of decent home performance helped that out just a bit. The funny thing is they're basically homeless now as they're temporarily playing at St Andrew's which is, as we covered, Birmingham City's home field.
  28. Charlton Athletic (The Valley): 58-40-54, 0.469%. I almost forgot they had a nice 7-year stint in the early-to-mid 2000s, usually as a fairly mediocre team. Charlton has had fairly average home-field performance and it's no surprise that their middling performances carried over to their home field.
  29. Nottingham Forest (City Ground): 35-34-30, 0.468%. Another more obscure Premier League founder, the glory days had long passed them by and it showed in that they never lasted that long in the Premier League (despite a nice 3rd-place finish in 1994-95) and have not even had one season in it during the new millennium. They were relegated a total of three times from 1993-1999 and it's telling as their home record was very middling during their Premier League seasons.
  30. Oldham Athletic (Boundary Park): 15-14-13, 0.468%. This team is one of the most low-profile, if not the most low-profile, of all the clubs that founded the Premier League. They spent the first two seasons in it with miserable records, the latter of which got them relegated out for good. I say good because they haven't been back since. At least they were able to be somewhat competitive at home during that time?
  31. Bournemouth (Dean Court): 29-19-28, 0.465%. Considering that Bournemouth was promoted to the top flight for the first time ever just 5 seasons ago (2015-16), they've done OK at home all things considered. Their fans are probably happy they can celebrate home wins on a fairly regular basis.
  32. Burnley (Turf Moor): 37-20-38, 0.460%. Third time's the charm. In Burnley's third try in the Premier League, they survived relegation and while they've never been all that spectacular have still managed to maintain their spot at the cool table. Home-field performance could still see quite a few improvements, but overall, I think fans of this team are just happy to see this team play with the big kids. Considering this team hails from a town of less than 75,000 people, this is quite significant.
  33. Queens Park Rangers (Loftus Road/Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium): 51-38-50, 0.458%. Another not-as-well-known founding member of the Premier League, they were never able to last very long in the Premier League but managed to play OK football on their home turf to kind of make up for it to their fans. Much credit to City, of course, but I still remember thanking QPR so much for choking in stoppage time against them in 2011-12 to give City the title over United (I mean, it's almost like they stopped giving 100% effort after they realized they weren't in danger of being relegated even with a loss). It was a great day.
  34. Brighton & Hove Albion (Falmer Stadium/American Express Community Stadium): 13-13-12, 0.456%. Brighton's current stint in the Premier League has been spent towards the cellar for the most part, but for all their craptasticness, they've actually managed to do OK at home. Just OK, though.
  35. Derby County (Baseball Ground/Pride Park Stadium): 48-35-50, 0.449%. Derby's home record was OK until a certain season (ICYMI, search up "2007-08 Derby County record" on Google, get ready to avert your eyes quickly) came along. In said season, they went just 1-5-13 at home and since they've only spent 7 seasons in the Premier League (nice 6-year stint in the late 90s-early 2000s though) it really dragged down their points percentage quite a bit.
  36. Ipswich Town (Portman Road): 35-29-37, 0.442%. Ipswich is another one of those teams that you'd probably forget actually founded the Premier League. They didn't spend too much time in it though: just 5 years, a 3-year stint and a 2-year stint. The latter saw them finish a surprising 5th but then quickly fall into relegation territory and they haven't been back since. Their home record is fairly unimpressive but consider that this team was usually stuck towards the bottom of the league tables in its Premier League career.
  37. Barnsley (Oakwell): 7-4-8, 0.439%. Barnsley spent one season in the Premier League, also their only appearance in the top flight ever. They finished 19th but got unfortunate in that they got relegated with an unusually high 39 points. Their not-that-shabby home record (considering their circumstances) was a major reason why they're one of the "best" relegated teams in the Premier League era.
  38. Wolverhampton Wanderers (Molineux Stadium): 33-22-38, 0.434%. Wolverhampton finally got into the top half of the Premier League last season and with the way they're playing this season, their home percentage is going to rise. It's currently hurt by a bunch of lousy performances in the 2000s and early 2010s.
  39. Wigan Athletic (JJB Stadium/DW Stadium): 50-45-57, 0.428%. Wigan never had a single-digit finish in the Premier League and they weren't really all that great at home either. They had a very weird 2012-13 season where they got relegated and won the FA Cup. At least fans could celebrate that as the ship sunk into the Championship (and have not returned to the Premier League since).
  40. Sunderland (Roker Park/Stadium of Light): 98-87-119, 0.418%. A few historically awful seasons in the 2000s are partly to blame but even in their extended Premier League stint from 2007-08 to 2016-17, Sunderland was a dysfunctional flaming garbage wreck and it leaked into their home-field record in which they couldn't even consistently guarantee their fans a win on their home turf. This is a very large sample size as well. Yikes.
  41. Watford (Vicarage Road): 37-32-45, 0.418%. Watford has finally found some consistency in the Premier League after 2 prior 1-year stints but they're still waiting for their first single-digit placement and despite their win over Liverpool, will have to fight just to stay in the Premier League. Their win over Liverpool was at home but they've still struggled overall to find wins in front of their home crowd.
  42. West Bromwich Albion (The Hawthorns): 73-60-95, 0.408%. West Brom was surprisingly bad at home even if they weren't that great in the Premier League. They've spent more time at the top than other teams toward the bottom of the list and they also had an 8-year stint in the Premier League.
  43. Bradford City (Valley Parade): 10-15-13, 0.395%. Bradford's two-year stint in the Premier League went about as awfully as you could've expected from such a small-market team. They couldn't really turn their home-field advantage into anything since they were that bad.
  44. Hull City (KC Stadium): 12-9-17, 0.395%. Hull spent two forgettable seasons in the Premier League in 2013-14 and 2014-15, and their play didn't improve that much at home at all. I honestly forgot they even played in the Premier League at one point. BTW their stadium is now called KCOM Stadium.
  45. Crystal Palace (Selhurst Park): 58-46-90, 0.378%. There are several articles out there about this already, but it's truly amazing to me how awful Crystal Palace has played at home during its Premier League seasons. I thought it was due to the fact that they needed 5 tries just to get their first multiyear stint in the Premier League but even in their current stint, it sometimes feels like teams that come in to play basically get another home game on the season. Unlike other teams in the sub-0.400% points percentage at home, Crystal Palace has spent a considerable amount of time in the Premier League. I get that they've never had a single-digit placement in the Premier League but come on, maybe if you did a little better at home you wouldn't always be a lower-half finisher. I mean, Derby County went 1-5-13 at home in 2008 and even they managed to do better at home in around the same amount of time Crystal Palace has been in the Premier League.
  46. Blackpool (Bloomfield Road): 5-5-9, 0.351%. Blackpool's one season in the Premier League...was not that great for their home fans. They did about the same at home as they did on the road (5-4-10). But hey, they swept Liverpool. That's gotta count for something, right?
  47. Cardiff City (Cardiff City Stadium): 11-7-20, 0.351%. If Cardiff's goal was to provide a strong representation of the Welsh capital in Premier League play, then they did a spectacularly awful job at that. They had terrible seasons both times they made the Premier League and both ended with a quick boot back to the Championship. No home-field advantage was going to make up for that. But they beat City at home in the 2013-14 season. Never forget that!
  48. Swindon Town (County Ground): 4-7-10, 0.302%. Swindon's one season in the Premier League (also in top-flight football) went about as terribly as you could imagine as they finished last in 22nd place. No amount of home-field advantage is going to make up for that as Swindon didn't do all that well in front of the crowd either.
  49. Huddersfield Town (Kirklees Stadium/John Smith's Stadium): 8-8-22, 0.281%. Huddersfield had a recent two-year stint in the Premier League and it was a very unimpressive affair. They were very close to relegation territory in 2017-18 and had a 2018-19 season that was downright unwatchable at times (they finished 20th with just 3 wins). Teams basically had field days in Huddersfield given how terrible this team was. Home-field advantage? Basically nonexistant for this club in the Premier League (sample size is small, but still).

VRSALJKO TO INTER, ARIAS TO ATLETI

Sime Vrsaljko has left Atletico Madrid to join Inter Milan on loan, with PSV right-back Santiago Arias replacing him at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Inter will have the option to turn Vrsaljko's loan into a permanent deal, according to Sky in Italy. They had been seeking a replacement for Joao Cancelo, who has joined Serie A rivals Juventus.
Vrsaljko's arrival at Inter could affect Matteo Darmian's future. The San Siro was touted as a possible destination for the want-away Manchester United full-back, but Inter's interest may now have cooled.

Stoke manager Gary Rowett insists Peter Crouch has a pivotal role to play in the club’s bid to earn an immediate return to the Premier League.
Crouch is understood to be interesting Burnley over a summer departure from the bet365 Stadium before the transfer deadline on August 9.
"Crouchy is certainly not one of those players we want to lose," Rowett told SSN at the EFL launch.

Hamilton skipper Darian MacKinnon has warned the club's new players that they will need to learn fast in Scotland's top flight.
Six of Accies' nine summer signings will be playing in the Ladbrokes Premiership for the first time and Hamilton have not had the best of preparations for Saturday's season opener against Hearts.
MacKinnon said: "We have lost a few players and brought the new ones in so it will be interesting to see how they cope in the Premiership.

RODGERS: NO CHANGE TO RECRUITMENT POLICY

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers insists nothing has changed in the recruitment process at Parkhead.
At the media conference ahead of his side's Champions League clash in Rosenborg, Rodgers said, with regards to recruitment: "It is exactly the same as when I walked in.
"We will look to find players that fit the profile of the club and very importantly, the profile of how we play and once we have found the player, it will be over to the club to try to do a deal to bring the player in.

ALISSON: I FEEL AT HOME ALREADY

Alisson has trained with his Liverpool team-mates for the first time and says he already "feels at home" at the club.
Liverpool paid a world-record fee for a goalkeeper in capturing the Brazil international from Roma for £65m this month and he has now joined Jurgen Klopp's men at their training base in France.
"It has been a great day which I had been looking forward to," Alisson told Liverpool's official website.
"I've had a good few resting days with my family but we all couldn't wait to get the new season under way soon. It's only my first day and I feel at home already."

Manchester United chief scout Javier Ribalta has left the club to join Zenit Saint Petersburg just 13 months after arriving at Old Trafford.
Ribalta, formerly head scout for Juventus, has agreed a deal to become Zenit's new sporting director until 2021.
During his five years with Juventus, Ribalta took a leading role in the signings of Paul Pogba, Paulo Dybala, Kingsley Coman, Dani Alves and Alvaro Morata.

Blackpool defender Curtis Tilt has handed in a transfer request in the hope it will force through a move to Ipswich, according to Sky sources.
Ipswich are understood to have made an offer in the region of £700,000 for the 26-year-old centre back.

And sources have told SSN they previously indicated they would let Tilt leave Bloomfield Road this summer.

LEEDS' SACKO LOANED TO LAS PALMAS

Leeds United forward Hadi Sacko has joined Las Palmas on loan until the end of the season.
The 24-year-old moved to Elland Road on loan two years ago from Sporting Lisbon, before making the move permanent last summer.
However, Sacko made just 18 appearances in all competition for Leeds last season, and they have now allowed him to join Segunda Division side Las Palmas.
They finished 19th in La Liga last season, and are now preparing for life in the second tier.

Ipswich Town have signed defender Janoi Donacien on loan from Accrington Stanley.
The two clubs have agreed an undisclosed fee for the 24-year-old, and the move will become permanent once Donacien - who was born in St Lucia - receives a work permit.

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini admits he assumed a deal to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Turin from Real Madrid was "impossible".
Chiellini was not optimistic a deal for Ronaldo, who trained with his new team-mates in Turin for the first time on Tuesday, would be completed, but believes he will transform the title-winning side.
"[The first time I heard about Ronaldo], I said to my friends, 'Nah, it's impossible,'" Chiellini told ESPN in an exclusive interview ahead of Wednesday's MLS All-Star game. "After one day, [I thought] maybe it is possible.
"With our manager, with our director ... it's a reality. Juventus is growing ... year after year, and we need a champion like Cristiano.

Leeds have signed Patrick Bamford from fellow Championship side Middlesbrough on a four-year deal for a fee of £7m, rising to £10m.
Bamford has played for England at U21 level and spent five years at Chelsea but did not make any senior appearances for the London side.
However, he was loaned out to several clubs, including Middlesbrough, who signed him permanently in January 2017.
He scored 13 goals in 44 games last term as Boro reached the play-offs, before losing in the semi-finals.

FULHAM KEEN ON GUILAVOGUI

Fulham are interested in signing Wolfsburg midfielder Josuha Guilavogui, according to Sky sources.
The 27-year-old defensive-midfielder has two years left on his contract and the Whites are looking for another player of his profile to compete with Kevin McDonald.
Guilavogui is a France international with seven caps, but has not played on the international scene since 2015.
The player joined Wolfsburg from Atletico Madrid on an initial two-year loan deal in 2014 before making the move permanent in 2016.
But he suffered a neck injury in a friendly that summer and did not return to action again until the following November.
Born in France but of Guinean descent, Guilavogui began his career as a youth at Toulon and Saint-Etienne, where he broke into the first-team before signing for Atletico in 2013.

Leicester City are poised to offer Harry Maguire a new deal worth £95,000-per-week to stave off interest from Manchester United, according to theDaily Express.
Leicester manager Claude Puel is confident Maguire will remain at the club, despite interest from United.
Sky Sports News reported last week United approached Leicester over the sale of the England centre-back.

We haven't even had to wait for the Premier League season to begin to get the sharp end of a prickly Jose Mourinho this summer. The Manchester United boss has slammed the "disadvantage" his side has with so many players away from the club following their countries' progress at the World Cup.
But he suggested he may also be frustrated with United's progress in the transfer market - having signed only Fred, 19-year-old Diego Dalot and 35-year-old third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant so far this summer.

LIVERPOOL WANT £27M FOR ORIGI

Liverpool have slapped a £27m price tag on Divock Origi as Jurgen Klopp looks to trim his squad ahead of the new season, the Liverpool Echo reports.
Seven players could leave Anfield before the August 9 transfer deadline, potentially generating £100m in sales.
Liverpool want £27m for Belgium international Origi, who spent last season on loan at Wolfsburg and has attracted interest from Valencia.
Danny Ings, Marko Grujic, Sheyi Ojo, Lazar Markovic, Simon Mignolet and Pedro Chirivella are also expected to leave before the start of the season.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will consider selling Anthony Martial but only to a club outside of the Premier League, reports the Guardian.
The United boss has reluctantly decided that if Martial does not wish to play for the club then his departure should be explored.

KLOPP FEELS EXPECTATION RISE

Liverpool will feel the weight of increased expectation to deliver silverware this season after making encouraging forays into the transfer market, manager Jurgen Klopp said.
"You're right and people will say that it is the next step. We need to be ready for that," Klopp told reporters in New York, where Liverpool were continuing their pre-season tour.
"I know about the expectations and that's completely normal. First of all we have to play the football that gives us an opportunity to win something. We cannot talk about winning something before we start the season."
